Democratic and Republican Unassembled Caucus: Election on June 28

With the recent passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Governor Glenn Youngkin has set September 9th as the date of the special election for the new representative of Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. In response, both the Democratic and Republican committees for this district have announced details for their unassembled caucus or firehouse primaries to nominate their respective party candidates for the September 9th Special Election.

Political parties organize and fund firehouse primary elections, allowing for more efficient nominations, greater control over the nomination process, and potentially higher voter turnout. In Virginia, these primaries occur outside of the November general election. Due to a shorter timeframe, they typically have fewer polling locations and shorter voting hours than state-run elections. In addition, unlike a publicly funded election, an unassembled caucus has party rules that voters must adhere to.

The 11th Congressional District Democrats nominee will be selected on June 28 from 7 am – 7 pm at 17 locations countywide, with early voting dates June 24, 25, and 26 from 3 – 8 pm at the Fairfax County Government Center. The 11th Congressional District of the Republican Party of Virginia will be selecting their nominee on June 28 from 9 am  – 4 pm at Fairfax High School, with pre-registration available starting on June 25. For anyone who cannot vote on Saturday, June 28, 2025 for religious reasons, may cast their ballots on Friday, June 27 from 3 – 5 pm at the Fairfax GOP Headquarters, 4246 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.
