Fairfax High School Sophomore steps on the World Stage this Summer

Drum Corps International (DCI), often described as the “Major League of Marching Band,” will welcome Fairfax High School sophomore Mickey Johnson to its World Class ranks this summer. Mickey has been selected to perform as a baritone player with Music City, a DCI World Class corps based in Nashville, Tennessee, for the 2026 season.

Mickey’s musical journey began early in childhood, when a deep love for music first took shape. He has always been especially drawn to euphonium and baritone, which quickly became his favorite instruments. While he explored different musical settings, he found that traditional orchestral and indoor concert band settings did not fully match the sound and style he connected with. It wasn’t until he discovered the marching band that everything clicked, as he found the blend of sound and musical energy he had been looking for.

Following the Fairfax High School Marching Lions’ successful performance at the Bands of America competition in Delaware this past fall, Mickey was inspired to take his marching experience to the next level by auditioning for Drum Corps International.

He views the challenge not as self-doubt, but as the motivation to simply get to the opportunity and show his skills. “I’ve never been as confident in my ability to succeed as my ability’s display,” he shared in our email interview. “The main challenge was just to get there, and show my talent. I still have to work extremely hard to maintain consistency and development as a musician but since then, I have been a much more confident person.”

Veterans of DCI often advise aspiring performers to begin auditioning two years before they believe they are ready. Taking that guidance to heart, Mickey attended Music City’s December audition camp, where he earned a callback invitation. After returning for the January callback camp, he was offered a contract for the 2026 season.

Since then, Mickey has been traveling to Nashville monthly for intensive three-day training sessions with the corps and will join the ensemble full-time on May 30.

Beyond his personal growth as a musician, Mickey also credits the marching band community itself as a major source of inspiration. Since his freshman year, he has valued the strong sense of connection within the Fairfax band program, noting the unique way musicians blend both musically and personally. He describes the marching band world as an especially welcoming and uplifting environment, where the shared passion for music creates a strong sense of belonging.

The 2026 Drum Corps International World Championship Finals will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

We wish Mickey and Music City the very best of luck in the upcoming season!
