City of Fairfax Schools Superintendent Jeff Platenberg Announces Retirement After 40 Years of Public Service

After a remarkable 40-year career in public education, City of Fairfax Schools Superintendent Jeff Platenberg has announced his retirement, effective July 31, 2025. Platenberg made the announcement during the School Board meeting on May 5, sharing his deep reflections on a career filled with significant achievements and community impact.

“While there is always more work to be done, I am profoundly proud of what we have achieved together,” Platenberg stated in his speech, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that has characterized his tenure. He described his service to the City of Fairfax as a true honor, expressing gratitude for the students, staff, and families that have been integral to his journey.

Mr. Platenberg joined the City of Fairfax Schools after honing his skills in educational leadership and management across multiple school districts, including Fairfax County Public Schools, where he served as Assistant Superintendent for Facilities and Transportation.

A highly regarded leader in educational facility planning, Platenberg holds a certification in educational facility planning, is a licensed general contractor, and has been honored with numerous accolades throughout his career. These include prestigious recognitions such as the Association of School Business Officials International Eagle Award and the Education Week “Leader to Learn From.” His commitment to excellence in education earned him the Bammy Award for “What is Right in Education.”

Under his guidance, the City of Fairfax Schools expanded both academic and support services significantly. Some of the highlights of Platenberg’s accomplishments include:

– Cooperative Advancements**: Laying the groundwork for an Electrical Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at Fairfax High School.

– Student Support**: Implementing behavioral and transitional support roles across all grade levels to better serve students’ diverse needs.

– Partnership Growth**: Deepening partnerships with George Mason University, which enhanced student mentorship programs, tutoring services, and early admission opportunities.

– Facilities Improvement**: Leading successful bond referendums to modernize elementary school facilities while completing various capital projects focusing on safety upgrades, including ADA enhancements and athletic facility renovations.

Platenberg has also prioritized school security, introducing new staff, surveillance technology, and entryway improvements to ensure a safe learning environment.

“Relationships are the foundation of great schools,” he stated. “I’m most proud of the collaborative culture we built with our principals, staff, city partners, and community. We are a small division that accomplishes extraordinary things.” This philosophy has been central to creating an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

As Superintendent Platenberg prepares to retire, the School Board has accepted his announcement and is set to begin the process of identifying his successor in the coming weeks. His retirement not only marks the end of a significant chapter for the City of Fairfax Schools but also leaves a legacy of excellence, collaboration, and student-centered focus that will influence the district for years to come.
