TJHSST Makes History in Virginia Athletics

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is kicking off the 2026 season with a groundbreaking milestone — one that will echo far beyond the scoreboard.

For the first time in Virginia history, a school has appointed female head coaches to lead both its varsity football and varsity baseball programs. TJHSST isn’t just competing — it’s changing the game.

In January, Rachel Worsham was named the new head coach of the varsity football team, bringing with her an extraordinary résumé built over more than 17 years in the sport. A powerhouse on the field, Worsham earned her place in the DC Divas Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024 and, in January 2026, was announced as a finalist for the Hall of Fame — further cementing her legacy in women’s football.

During her ten seasons with the DC Divas, Worsham was a starter on two national championship teams (2015 and 2016) and represented the United States on the Women’s Football Alliance Team USA squad. In 2017, she reached the pinnacle of international competition, winning a gold medal at the Women’s World Championships.

Her impact extends beyond her playing days. Worsham has already made her mark in high school athletics, coaching at Marshall High School and serving as an assistant coach for Robinson Secondary School’s girls varsity flag football team. Now, she steps into TJHSST ready to build a culture of excellence, toughness, and belief.

On the baseball diamond, Jennifer Hammond has been leading the varsity baseball team since September 2025 — and she brings just as much firepower. With 20 years of playing experience in the Eastern Women’s Baseball Conference, Hammond has dedicated her life to the sport. She remains deeply involved in the Conference today as both a player and coach, continuing to elevate the game she loves.

Hammond is also an active force in DC Girls Baseball, helping create opportunities for the next generation. Her coaching résumé includes five years with the Alexandria Aces Collegiate Summer Baseball program and the Cal Ripken Collegiate Summer League — experience that blends high-level competition with player development.

Together, Worsham and Hammond represent more than historic hires. They represent leadership, excellence, and a new era for Virginia high school athletics. TJHSST isn’t just preparing for kickoff and first pitch — it’s setting a powerful example of what’s possible.
