Virginia Prepares for the 75th Governor’s Inauguration on January 17, 2026

Virginians are gearing up to witness a historic moment as the Commonwealth prepares to inaugurate its next governor. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond.

This year’s inauguration marks the start of a four-year term, following the November 2025 election. Another peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another – a quintessential hallmark of American Democracy. As in past years, the event will feature a ceremonial parade, inaugural balls, and other public festivities throughout the weekend.

The main swearing-in ceremony at Capitol Square is open to the public, but tickets are required due to limited seating. Officials advise Virginians to stay tuned for announcements from the governor-elect’s inauguration committee, local legislators, and the official transition website. Past inaugurations have also offered tickets through local representatives and inaugural committees.

While access to the indoor ceremony is limited, many outdoor portions of the parade route and related events are free and open to the public. Residents can still watch the festivities from public areas, often with large screens set up for viewing.

For those unable to attend in person, the inauguration is expected to be televised and streamed online. Local news channels, including WTKR, WAVY, and WTVR, traditionally provide live coverage. National networks and public affairs channels, such as C-SPAN, also frequently broadcast these ceremonies. Online streaming will be available through broadcaster websites and apps, allowing Virginians across the state to follow the historic proceedings from home.

Inaugural Weekend Events

In addition to the swearing-in, inaugural weekend will feature:

  • A Welcome Reception on Friday, January 16
  • The Inaugural Parade on Saturday, January 17
  • Inaugural Balls Saturday evening
  • Executive Mansion Open House on Sunday, January 18, open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis

Virginians are encouraged to check official announcements as the inauguration approaches for updates on ticket distribution, schedules, and broadcast times by signing up on the Spanberger Inaugural Committee website at or the 2026 Inauguration website

With both in-person and virtual options, Virginians statewide have the opportunity to witness this significant civic event and celebrate the peaceful transition of leadership.
